Symbolism

The meaning of our maritime symbols

Within O.C.E Grand Lodge, maritime symbols communicate principles of life, leadership, fellowship, discipline and personal development.

Symbols

What each symbol teaches

The Anchor

Stability

Stability • Integrity • Loyalty

The Anchor represents the principles that keep a member grounded when circumstances become uncertain. Just as an anchor prevents a vessel from drifting, O.C.E. teaches members to remain anchored in integrity, discipline, loyalty, good character and sound judgment.

“Remain anchored in your principles, even when the waters around you change.”

The Compass

Direction

Direction • Purpose • Wisdom

The Compass represents direction in the voyage of life. A vessel may have power and speed, but without direction it can travel far in the wrong direction. Members are encouraged to establish clear goals, seek knowledge, make responsible decisions and periodically examine whether they are still travelling toward their intended destination.

“Direction is more important than speed when navigating your voyage.”

The Helm

Responsibility

Control • Discipline • Responsibility

The Helm represents responsibility for one's decisions and direction. Holding the helm symbolically means accepting responsibility for your choices, conduct, leadership, finances, relationships and future. Power should always be accompanied by responsibility and self-control.

“Take the Helm. Accept responsibility for the direction of your voyage.”

The Ship

Fellowship

The Order • Unity • Fellowship

The Ship represents the O.C.E. community itself. People aboard a vessel may perform different duties, but everyone shares an interest in the successful voyage. O.C.E. brings together people from different professions, businesses, cultures and backgrounds.

“Different people, different strengths, but one vessel and one voyage.”

The Sea

Life

Life • Challenge • Opportunity

The Sea represents life. The sea is not permanently calm, and neither is life. Difficult waters should develop wisdom, resilience, patience and experience, while favourable waters should be used responsibly to make progress.

“You cannot command every sea, but you can learn how to navigate it.”

The Captain

Leadership

Leadership • Courage • Responsibility

The Captain represents an individual who accepts responsibility rather than merely seeking authority. Within O.C.E., members are encouraged to become Captains of their own lives — developing knowledge, confidence, discipline, legitimate prosperity, responsible influence and leadership.

“A Captain is not defined merely by authority, but by responsibility for the voyage.”

The Voyage

Experience

Experience • Growth

The Voyage represents the continuing journey through knowledge, relationships, challenges, achievement and personal development.

The Crew

Mutual support

Fellowship • Mutual Support

A Captain cannot successfully operate a vessel entirely alone. In the same way, O.C.E. emphasises Brotherhood, Sisterhood, networking, mentorship, cooperation and mutual support.
